Dark and Broken Things

Okay so before I get into another study frenzy and reading withdrawal and live under a rock for a few weeks, I will review one more book and then catch up on all the ones I have read after I've taken this next test.

Dark and Broken Things by John Mulhall is oh my as I stated on Twitter. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I have yet to figure it out but maybe one day I will and I will not share because that takes away everything. The beauty of this novel is that it keeps you guessing. I love books like that. I've read reviews on Geddy's Moon from critics and fans alike about Mr. Mulhall. I must agree on one in particular. Mr. Mulhall is a cross between Dean Koontz and Stephen King. Now I have only read one of Stephen King (The Shining) and listened to two Dean Koontz (Darkness Under the Sun and the story about Trixie). I am in 100% agreement.

Now, I devoured half the book after I did not pass my Independent Adjuster License exam for the state of Louisiana for the....third time. Chapter 40 brought me to tears with Virgil talking to David and quoting Meister Eckhart. It hit home for me because I was getting close to giving up on the test. So I took Virgil's advice and just said thank you everyday. I passed the exam after a few more fails (it was a tough test 33% pass rate). To this day I still say thank you.

***Disclaimer: if you haven't read this yet, I'm sorry if I give anything away with this next paragraph, hopefully I don't. ***

I couldn't imagine how David thought a tendon looked like a maggot while hallucinating. Personally I had not seen a tendon until after I read that part of the book. I got bit by a dog on my hand and it was deep enough to where I could see the tendon (nothing severed and I still have full function of my hand). Now I understand.

This book is one of those that will stick with me and will feel like I finished it just yesterday. And I highly, highly recommend that if you have not read it yet, get to it and while you're at it read Geddy's Moon. I think Mr. Mulhall has definitely earned a spot in my top favorite authors. (I can't pick favorite books cause there are hundreds of them. I'm a book-aholic and proud of it.)
